Formed in 1989 at the University of Tasmania, the Centre has grown substantially over the years and is now widely regarded as a global leader in ore deposit research. It is home to over 50 highly qualified research staff and over 100 postgraduate students, further cementing its position as the largest university-based team of ore deposit researchers in the world. CODES has developed a strong and long-standing reputation for delivering high quality research outcomes of direct relevance to the mining industry. This has been achieved over a period in excess of 30 years, which includes terms as a Federal Government-funded ARC Key Centre (1989-1996), ARC Special Research Centre (1997 to 2005) and ARC Centre of Excellence (2005 to 2013). CODES is located within the University of Tasmania's School of Natural Sciences, which is part of the College of Sciences and Engineering (CoSE). Highly productive worldwide collaborations have been developed with over 60 industry companies, plus a host of joint research initiatives with more than 110 institutions and universities. It currently has major research projects spanning 30 countries, and is one of the leading academic groups to publish in Economic Geology.
