Kappa Alpha Theta - Gamma Epsilon (University of Western Ontario)
www.uwotheta.comKappa Alpha Theta first came to Canada in 1887 when the gentlemen of Zeta Psi at the University of Toronto petitioned to have a chapter established on their campus. The proposal was brought to Grand Convention and seven women were initiated into the first Women’s Fraternity in Canada, the Sigma chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta at the University of Toronto. In 1937, local society Pi Sigma at Western University petitioned Kappa Alpha Theta Headquarters to create a charter at UWO. The group was found by the Sigma chapter to hold the highest positions for women on campus in academics and student government. Florence Scott, charter member of Pi Sigma, went to Chicago to represent the petitioners before Grand Council. On September 17th Grand President Jeanette Grasett, with the help of the members of the Sigma chapter, initiated 19 college members and 24 alumnae into Kappa Alpha Theta. In this group were Dr. Carol Whittow Buck, the first woman awarded a PhD by Western. Gamma Epsilon became Canada’s fifth Theta chapter. Contact Us!
