Founded in 1992, Ragamala Dance Company was born of the creative vision of Ranee Ramaswamy and Aparna Ramaswamy. As Artistic Directors, choreographers, and performers, Ranee and Aparna create dance landscapes that dwell in opposition—secular and spiritual life, inner and outer worlds, human and natural concerns, rhythm and stillness—to find the transcendence that lies in between. As mother and daughter, they draw inspiration from their hybrid identities as first-generation Indian-Americans—the rich traditions, deep philosophical roots, and ancestral wisdom of India meeting the curiosity, openness, and creative freedom fostered in the U.S. Their vision of the South Indian classical dance form of Bharatanatyam as a dynamic, living tradition has achieved a national reputation for excellence and innovation.
