Laboratorio Internacional de Investigación sobre el Genoma Humano
www.liigh.unam.mxNational University of Mexico (UNAM) has created, with the collaboration of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, the International Laboratory for Human Genome Research (Laboratorio Internacional de Investigacion sobre el Genoima Humano, LIIGH) that was inaugurated on April 8, 2015. The Laboratory is located in the City of Queretaro, a prosperous and most safe City in the middle of the Country, in a UNAM campus that also harbors a Neurobiology Institute, a Physics Research Center, a Geosciences Research Center, an Institute of Mathematics, among other Research and Education Institutions. The International Laboratory for Human Genome Research has as its fundamental mission to develop the optimal academic potential of young Mexican scientists with a first level training in Genomic Sciences. This is expected to be achieved by a combination the following elements: 1) each young researcher will be considered as an independent scientist from the time of incorporation in the Laboratory (at the age of about 30 years); 2) a continuous program of visiting scientists of world level recognition (HORIZONS IN GENOMICS); 3) an Annual Scientific Meeting ; and 4) collaboration with other institutions, both from Mexico and from abroad. Among the main research areas of LIIGH are: Genome Dynamics and Evolution; Expresion of Genetic Information; Cancer Biology; Genimics of Brain Development and Disorders; Population Genomics. It is expected that research will be generated by novel ideas and not by massive data collection. Most projects will use both bioinformatics and experimental laboratory. Different models will be used, in particular yeast, mouse and human.
