www.napoleon200.orgThe defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo gave Britain one of its most significant victories, secured British global superiority for over 100 years, and made the Duke of Wellington one of Britain’s most enduring national heroes. The death of Napoleon on Saint Helena on the 5th May 1821 was the final confirmation of this triumph. The Napoleon 200 appeal was set up to explore the significance of the death of Napoleon Bonaparte, on the island of Saint Helena, on 5th May 1821. We will explore the event’s importance to British history, why it still matters, and what the legacy of that period is to the UK and Saint Helena. While the history of Napoleon Bonaparte’s rise and fall is well documented, the story of Napoleon on Saint Helena is less well known. We aim to tell that fascinating story through the experiences of not only Napoleon but the others in his orbit during his final years on Saint Helena. Through exploring these less well known narratives, we will not only present a fresh perspective on Napoleon, but tell the intriguing story of Saint Helena, its people, its role in British history, the slave trade, and the impact its most famous inhabitant had on the island.
