Gathimba Edwards Foundation
www.gathimbaedwardsfoundation.orgWhat started as two international athletes on the same running track start line in Aberdeen, Scotland has evolved into a partnership which gets Kenyan children onto the same start lines in life that many of us take for granted. Myles Edwards first met Gideon Gathimba whilst racing in a 1 mile running event organised by his Father, Mel Edwards for the opening of Aberdeen Sports Village in 2009. Two years later Myles travelled to Kenya to live and train with Gideon. An inspirational visit to the Pavilion Village children's home in Karatina provided Gideon and Myles with the catalyst to establish the Gathimba Edwards Foundation (registered charity in Scotland and Kenya). In 2013, the Pavilion Village was home to 22 children – most of whom had lost their parents due to HIV or in some cases been abandoned or abused. The home was in dire straits with no electricity or proper mattresses, broken windows, a lack of food and school fee debts meant many of the children were unable to attend school. Gideon and Myles were determined to help change their situation and decided to do all they could to give them the chance of a bright future. As of 2021, the home has now looked after 44 children who have either completed or are currently in education. Electricity has been installed, new furniture purchased, windows repaired, a 16 bed dormitory was built and the children are eating 3 meals a day. As a charity we have now built 50 homes for 212 children and their families, delivered school fee, uniform, shoe and book support to a total of 561 children, enabled 40 families to start their own business & farming projects, purchased and delivered 275 beds and hosted 2,406 children and parents across 40 seminars.
