The legend suggests that the artist Bernardino Luini, a brilliant pupil of Leonardo da Vinci was commissioned to paint a fresco of the Madonna of the Miracles in Saronno. To portray the Madonna, he chose as his muse a beautiful local innkeeper. As a mark of her gratitude she prepared a special gift of a flask full of an amber liqueur, fragrant and delicate. Recipes for this were passed down through the generations of many families in the area at this time including the Reina family. In the 1900’s Domenico Reina, armed with his family recipe for almonds steeped in alcoholic spirits opened his first shop named “Domenico Reina Coloniali” in Saronno. The success of this then led to the creation of ILLVA SARONNO in the 1940’s and soon became the stylish symbol of Italian taste that is loved in over 160 markets today.
