The UNESCO International Bureau of Education (UNESCO-IBE) is a specialised institute for curriculum and related matters based in Geneva, Switzerland. As a UNESCO Category 1 Institute, the IBE's mission is to strengthen the capacities of Member States to design, develop, and implement curricula that ensure the equity, quality, development-relevance and resource efficiency of education and learning systems. The IBE was established in 1925, as a private, non-governmental organisation, by leading Swiss educators to provide intellectual leadership and to promote international cooperation in education. In 1929, the IBE became the first intergovernmental organisation in the field of education. At the same time, Jean Piaget, professor of psychology at the University of Geneva, was appointed director and he went on to lead IBE for 40 years, with Pedro Rosselló as assistant director. In 1969, the IBE became an integral part of UNESCO, while retaining intellectual and functional autonomy.
