Pride and Joy Foundation
www.prideandjoyfoundation.orgIn November 2019, our founder's TEDx talk about her experience with coming out and suicidal ideation went viral. By March 2020, she was speaking all over the nation and providing much-needed visibility and validation to LGBTQ college students and families. Then Covid hit. Students were sent home to quarantine with their families. Many of them had just recently come out and were then home with families that didn’t affirm their new identity. There were no pride parades, no gay coffeeshops to go to, no place for them to show up and be seen for who they truly are. Suicides began to skyrocket. We also saw LGBTQ parents who were trying to navigate parenting while homeschooling. We saw grandparents who were tasked with helping grandchildren study online and they began to notice the struggle of their LGBTQ loved ones. They had so many questions but no safe place to ask them. In response to these struggles, we formed the Pride and Joy Foundation. We have developed three distinct strategies for achieving our mission, to reduce the rate of suicide and homelessness in the LGBTQ community. 1. We teach suicide awareness and prevention workshops to LGBTQ students at colleges across the nation. 2. We host “Creating LGBTQ Inclusion” workshops for businesses that recognize the value of diversity and inclusion. 3. We provide an online support group, which hosts discussions and events for LGBTQ families and the allies that love them.
