The Egan Maritime Institute is the island’s only non-profit organization devoted exclusively to celebrating Nantucket’s seafaring heritage. Recognizing that Nantucket’s ongoing relationship with the sea has shaped the island’s rich history and distinctive character. Throughout the year, the Institute also sponsors informative and entertaining speaker programs, often featuring local residents. Topics include a variety of special interests relating to Nantucket’s maritime traditions, history, and culture. The Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum preserves the memory of those Islanders who risked their lives to save shipwrecked mariners. The non-profit museum takes visitors inside maritime history, featuring over 5,000 objects from famous shipwrecks and lifesaving equipment used to save seafarers in trouble.
