The Michigan Legislature created Intermediate School Districts (ISDs) in 1962. Like other ISD's, the AMA ESD coordinates essential services with our local constituent school districts. The AMA ESD service area encompasses all of Alpena, Montmorency, and Alcona Counties and includes Alpena Public Schools, Alcona, Atlanta, and Hillman Community Schools. The AMA provides business services for some of our smaller districts, leadership and program support for all our districts in early childhood education, instructional coaching, student intervention supports, and special education - our largest support area. In addition to supporting our local districts on-site/in their buildings, the AMA ESD operates Pied Piper School. Our school serves students who are Moderately Cognitively Impaired, Severely Cognitively Impaired, Severely Multiply Impaired, and Autistic Impaired from age 3 to 26 years.
