Operationskollen helps guide patients and their families throughout the process of undergoing surgery. Instead of piles of paper with generalized information handed out to patients, the Operationskollen app supplies patients and their loved ones with a personalized experience using specially adapted interactive information. Patients can now prepare for their surgery at home and be better prepared for early mobilization, while healthcare providers realise shorter length of stays and lower rates of cancelled surgeries. Operationskollen empowers patients and improves health outcomes. The Operationskollen app evolved out of a project at Västerås Hospital, where the orthopaedic clinic was seeking improvements in clinical results as well as economic impact. The clinical team identified patient information as a critical point of failure in the current de facto standard of undergoing surgery. They turned to Jesper Hessius, an app developer and medical doctor, who had previously made apps such as Pillerkollen (which helped patients understand their medication). Based on the issues raised by the medical staff at the clinic and initially solely developed by Jesper Hessius, the app has almost completely replaced paper-based patient guides, while the clinic has shown radically decreased number of cancellations, record breaking shortened length of stays as well as improved patient satisfaction. Operationskollen has received funding from Vinnova, Sweden’s innovation agency, but is otherwise self-funded. Invaluable feedback has been supplied by the medical staff at the Orthopaedic clinic in Västerås as well as their patients.
