International Year of Glass 2022
www.iyog2022.orgOver the past 60 years, the General Assembly of the United Nations has acknowledged important fields of international endeavor and their contributions to society by declaring United Nations International Years. The International Commission on Glass (ICG), along with the Community of Glass Associations (CGA) and the Glass Art Society (GAS) are promoting a United Nations International Year of Glass for 2022. It will underline the technological, scientific and economic importance of glass — that transparent and enabling material underpinning many of our technologies and which can facilitate the development of more just and sustainable societies to meet the challenges of globalization. Glass is also art, its history sharing the story and evolution of humankind. The UN International Year of Glass for 2022 will coincide with ICG’s International Congress on Glass in Berlin during the 100th anniversary of the German Society of Glass Technology (DGG). We have contacted with art and scientific glass-themed societies; glassmakers, fabricators and suppliers; academia, R&D centers and museums, to ask for formal endorsement. Our initial aim is a successful resolution at the UN General Assembly in December 2020. We have received more than 950 letters from 69 countries. Extensive planning is now underway including a kick-off meeting in Geneva, the ICG congress in Berlin, a worldwide congress focused in glass technology in China, a global art/history congress in USA and a closing congress in Japan. Special issues of journals and magazines, exhibitions in museums, and universal dissemination activities at all education levels are expected. New partners are welcome, particularly from under-represented areas such as Africa, Middle East and Balkan countries. Any readers wishing to join our circulation list should email to manager@iyog2022.org and visit our web site (www.iyog200.org) to register their support.
