The Latino Social Work Coalition (LSWC) and Scholarship Fund was founded in 2002 as part of the collaboration of the Puerto Rican Family Institute (PRFI) and the New York City Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW-NYC) to address the shortage of Latinx social workers in the New York City area The mission of the LSWC is to assure adequate number of culturally and linguistically competent Latino social workers in the NYC area as well as to enhance services to the Latino community. In order to achieve this, the Latino Social Work Coalition (LSWC) and Scholarship fund: -Provides scholarships to Latino MSW students each school year. -Provides mentorship and assistance to empower Latino MSW students to succeed in and graduate from social work school -Identifies and encourages appropriate students with a commitment to the field of human services to apply to graduate schools of social work. -Provides training for LCSW students and Latino Community -Provides education and advocacy regarding pertinent social service issues Since 2000, the LSWC has provided funding with more than $446,000 in 94 scholarship for 74 Latinx social work graduate student (as of 2014) which includes scholarship commitments by the graduate schools of social work. To facilitate the achievement of this collaborative effort, the LSWC enlists the support of a consortium of New York City’s eight graduate schools of social work including: -Adelphi University School of Social -Work Columbia University School of Social Work -Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service -Hunter College Silberman School of Social Work -Lehman College Department of Social Work -New York University Silver School of Social Work -Touro Graduate School of Social Work -Yeshiva University Wurzweiler School of Social Work
