The Department of Chemistry at CityU strives for excellence in teaching and research. The Department is unique for its multidisciplinary academics that encompass chemistry, biology and environmental science. The teaching and research activities of the Department are well supported by excellent laboratories with advanced equipment and facilities. The Department offers one undergraduate major, BSc in Chemistry. The major focuses on the application of knowledge, enabling students to understand important scientific issues, current technologies and the future challenges facing Hong Kong, its immediate region and the world. At the postgraduate level, we offer a taught programme — Master of Science in Chemistry and a research programme — Doctor of Philosophy in which students conduct advanced research on pressing scientific problems. Our MSc in Chemistry has been successfully selected as one of the few eligible programmes for the UGC Targeted Taught Postgraduate Programmes Fellowships Scheme 2020/21 for Local Students with 9 Fellowships Awards. Our research is among the top in the latest Research Assessment Exercise conducted by the University Grants Committee of Hong Kong in 2014. One of the highlights of our research has been the leading role we have played in the State Key Laboratory in Marine Pollution (SKLMP) and the Center of Super-Diamond and Advanced Films (COSDAF). The Department aims to develop close links with the public and industrial sectors to help meet society’s needs in all of its research endeavours. From undergraduate to staff projects, we carry out research in collaboration with industry partners, government bodies and local and overseas universities with the goal of working towards a better future for all.
