The Singapore Polo Club is one of the oldest sporting and social clubs in Singapore. Founded in 1886 by officers of the 1st Battalion of the King’s Own Regiment. The Club has a distinguished heritage and remains rich in its traditions of camaraderie and sportsmanship. Initially played in the centre of the old Singapore Race Course, now known as Farrer Park, anecdotal evidence suggests antagonism between polo players and golfers made the location untenable in the long term. The club eventually moved to Balestier Road in 1914, ultimately though the inadequate size of that pitch encouraged the search for a better ground, which ended up being its present home on Mount Pleasant Road. Its initial opening though in 1941 was thwarted by the outbreak of World War II and the Japanese occupation of Singapore. During this period the site was used as a gun emplacement and eventually then taken over by squatters and market gardeners. After the war, the task of returning Singapore to its pre-War state was overseen by Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten, a keen polo player himself. In addition to restoring prime infrastructure, Mountbatten also ordered that the polo ground be restored to playing glory. Polo was first played on the refurbished ground in May 1947. Inevitably the support of Mountbatten and subsequent Royal patronage over the years has helped to ensure the club’s legacy. Today, the Singapore Polo Club remains committed to its original charter - that of providing members with the facilities to enjoy polo, however it has evolved to also include riding and other sporting and social activities. It is now recognized as the premier equestrian lifestyle club in Singapore and one of the top facilities of its kind in the region.
