rain launched in 2016, becoming SA’s first data only network. Our mission is to make data more accessible to more people, because with access to an abundance of affordable internet, South Africans can do great things.   Our name comes from the Sotho proverb, ‘khotso pula nala’, which translates to ‘peace, rain, prosperity.   rain may be a young company, but we’ve been busy. After growing our 4G network to cover SA’s major metropoles, we went on to make history. In October 2019, we launched the first commercial 5G network in Africa, becoming the first standalone 5G network outside of China.   We are currently the largest provider of 5G fixed wireless services in South Africa and the third largest on the planet, providing 5G coverage to over 5 million SA households, and counting.   In line with our philosophy to help SA grow forwards, we continue to work with innovative education initiatives. Our partnership with the Click Foundation connects over 300 000 kids to foundational eLearning and feeding programmes.   Our sponsorship of the 5G Innovation Lab at WITS, is giving SA a head start in developing the technologies of the future.   In 2017, rain employed 100 people. Just 5 years later, we employ over 1000 people, an increase of 2 new employees every weekday.   We believe that technology has the power to change lives and, given the right tools, South Africans can do anything.   We’re optimistic about the future, and we’re just getting started.
