The university places great emphasis on research, particularly in the natural sciences but also in the social sciences and humanities. The university started out in 1876 as the Sapporo Agricultural College, the first modern academic institute in the country. The institution has a long history, and has one of Japan's most beautiful campuses. Green spaces, forests, and creeks are spread throughout the extensive campuses located in the cities of Sapporo and Hakodate, which experience distinct seasonal changes throughout the year. Since its founding, Hokkaido University has declared and cultivated its basic philosophies of education and research, namely the “Frontier Spirit," “Global Perspectives," “All-round Education,” and “Practical Learning.” There are currently 12 undergraduate schools, 21 graduate schools and 22 research institutes/centers. The university has undergraduate and graduate programs in both English and Japanese. International students are supported by their department, the Institute for International Collaboration, Student Support Center, and other organizations. Scholarships and financial support are also widely available.
