At SHINE we have accepted the challenge to bring on the learning revolution and have developed a one of a kind program that is ground breaking, award winning and has demonstrated unprecedented outcomes in changing the lives of early adolescent girls. SHINE Mission ‘Support, educate and empower young girls with life skills and emotional tools that help to place their future in their hands. The program was started in 2010 by founder Mandy Jolley at John Willcock College Geraldton with a strategic focus on improved education, retention, and attendance of the at risk13 to 15-year-old Aboriginal girls in the education system. The life skills and values based training SHINE has created is delivered in a fully purpose built hairdressing salon. Through the structured and nurturing Shine environment, the young women’s life skills and values are developed; having a great effect on fundamental skills such as accountability, responsibility, trust, connection, and employability. The program has outstanding documented results in improved attendance, behaviour and academic achievement. The SHINE model transcends language, culture, socioeconomic and geographical parameters to create an environment that is safe, open and most important, a space where girls become accountable and responsible for their actions and behaviour. In 2016, SHINE expanded the program to Geraldton Senior College that works exclusively with the senior students in Years 10 - 12. Other highschools in WA have expressed interest in the program. SHINE is based on the belief that true generational change starts with the empowerment of young girls.
