Africa Research Institute

Africa Research Institute is the UK’s only non-partisan and not-for-profit think-tank to focus exclusively on sub-Saharan Africa. Founded in 2007, ARI promotes best practice and progressive ideas for political, economic and social development. Our purpose is to reflect, understand and build on the dynamism in Africa today. Africa Research Institute informs domestic and international policymaking by promoting best practice and progressive ideas for government, the economy and civil society. ARI shares expertise through published research and interactive events. Our work encourages debate, questions orthodoxy and challenges “received wisdom” in and about Africa. We seek to promote a nuanced and representative understanding of the continent. ARI draws attention to actions and ideas that have worked in Africa, and seeks to identify new thinking where needed. Initiatives that are replicable, or have clear policy implications, are of particular interest. So too are ideas and issues that have been neglected or misrepresented in popular discourse. ARI collaborates with leading policymakers, practitioners and academics that have brought about positive change, or aspire to do so. We focus on diverse subjects from the reform of parliamentary institutions and constitutions to urban planning to taxation. The ideas and perspectives we promote are rooted in practical experience. Our partners understand what drives innovation and sustainable reform at local, national or regional level, and are also able to identify potential obstacles to further progress. These are some of the partners that we have worked with: • African Centre for Cities, University of Cape Town • Association of African Planning Schools • Office Burundais des Recettes • Malawi Law Commission • School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London • Sierra Leone National Electoral Commission • Somaliland Nursing and Midwifery Association
