Kerstin and her daughter, Rebecca, continue to run the family business out of Tucson. The company has around 40 stores across the United States. Buffalo Exchange prides itself as an advocate of the environment and raises funds for local charities through its Tokens for Bags® program, which offers every customer who opts to use a reusable bag (or to not use a bag at all) one “token” valued at $.05 USD (the cost to produce a bag) to donate to one of several local charities selected by the store employees. The program has generated over $893,860 for thousands of local nonprofit organizations since 1994 and has kept 15.5 million plastic bags from polluting the environment. In November, 2012, Buffalo Exchange discontinued the use of all disposable plastic bags, keeping an estimated 350,000 plastic bags out of landfills every year.
