Couples at Crossroads

From the time we become consciously aware of ourselves, we experience a drive to choose. We want this toy over that one. We want French fries, not onion rings. We want to go to a movie and not stay home. We want to stay in a relationship and not end things. The choices we make in a given day are almost endless. We can experience choosing in different ways. There are times when we are distressed because it feels like we have no choices. We feel cornered. At other times we can be distressed because it feels like there are too many choices. We feel overwhelmed. In each of these situations, both small and large, we are at some sort of crossroads. We believe healthy relationships are characterized by both commitment and freedom. Without commitment, relationships can feel unstable…even chaotic. Without freedom, they can feel stifling…even oppressive. Couples at Crossroads recognizes the depth and importance of choice in relationships. All of us want an ongoing sense of being chosen by our partner. At the same time, we want the freedom to choose those things that make us feel independent and unfettered. The paradox of this is best captured by the notion that we want to be both separate and related. Many of us give up our separateness in order to be related or we give up our relatedness in order to be separate. Neither of these choices works over the long haul. Couples at Crossroads offers an opportunity to experience this paradox productively. Our goal is to support individuals and couples in their day to day decision-making process as well as help to successfully implement decisions once they have been made.
