Vouchers 4 Veggies (EatSF)
www.eatsfvoucher.orgMany people are not able to eat healthy fruits and vegetables because those foods simply aren’t available or affordable where they live. Vouchers 4 Veggies is changing that. Vouchers 4 Veggies not only provides crucial healthy food supports, but also transforms the marketplace. Every month for six months, families and low-income adults (most with diet-related chronic disease) receive $20 to $40 of vouchers for free fruits and vegetables. We distribute vouchers by working through local health clinics and community-based organizations that they already know and trust, who also teach them about nutrition. Participants then use vouchers to make their own purchasing decisions at our partner stores in their own neighborhoods. With more customers buying fresh produce, local vendors increase the variety and quality of fresh fruits and vegetables they offer. Everyone in the neighborhood benefits. The program was founded as EatSF in 2015 by Dr. Hilary Seligman, a nationally recognized expert on the intersection between food insecurity and health. Since its launch, V4V has achieved rapid success, empowering 20,000+ people to increase their fruit and vegetable consumption by at least one serving per day and infusing over $3 million dollars of produce purchases into low-income neighborhoods. V4V has established strong multi-sector collaborations that include 130+ community distribution points for vouchers and a robust network of 40+ corner stores, grocers, and farmer’s markets that accept the vouchers. V4V is recognized as an evidence-based model for creating equitable local food systems and has been optimized for national replication, including programs in Los Angeles, rural California, Boulder, Cumberland VA, and Louisiana.
