Helping Hands for Single Moms Dallas is ending generational poverty by assisting low-income single mom families while the mother attains a college education, financial independence, and a positive family legacy. When a single mom first enrolls in college, her family situation often becomes worse before it gets better. In addition to midterms, finals and term papers, the single mom must attempt to live on inadequate financial resources while maintaining a household, managing transportation challenges, and nurturing her children. She is juggling school, family and work while facing loneliness, isolation, and low self-esteem. Together, these are significant challenges that often converge and can lead to dropping out of school. In order to facilitate success, we provide a suite of supportive services. Helping Hands for Single Moms works in partnership with communities to improve the lives of single mom college student families living in poverty. We promote the success of these single moms by providing a financial scholarship plus services package, “Scholarship Plus”. These services are tailored to meet the unique needs of a single mom and delivered in collaboration with local academic institutions, businesses, clubs, churches, and other non-profits. The Scholarship Plus program provides each family with an monthly financial stipend, AAA roadside assistance, auto repairs, dental care, holiday gifts, and family outings. Our Single Mom College Community gatherings are a place for personal and professional development where they learn practical life skills including money management, resume writing, job interviews, and receive other valuable support. Single moms often feel alone in their busy life so mentoring and encouragement are beneficial toward their success.
