But we thought, "what kind of marketing organization do we want to build?" There are thousands of marketing companies, and competition can be downright fierce. Obviously, finding the right niche was crucial. Early in some of our careers, many of us had reasonably technical positions that crossed over into sales and marketing. So having technical acumens and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide variety of clients at different levels of their organizations gave us useful insights into various businesses. A former marketing partner new our backgrounds and abilities. He asked us if we would be able to build a technical training program for a new product line. He needed to teach his company's Systems Engineers how to assist in sales cycles and train their customers on how to use the latest equipment and software. One day our company president was having lunch with a new European client. The client had attended a Sales and Marketing seminar earlier in the week and asked, "What type of company is Galileo?" After some discussion, our president thought a little and said, "We are a Knowledge Company. We train our clients on how to use their own products and share critical information with their customers about the products and services they are preparing to buy." Our client said, "Yes, you are a Knowledge Transfer Company. You transfer clients' knowledge internally to their staff and externally to their customers with education and marketing." That is where we are today. Galileo Consulting Services provides the education and marketing capabilities generally afforded to only the largest enterprises that have the means to retain permanent staff.
