Fabbrica Pienza
www.fabbricapienza.comFounded in 2013, Fabbrica Pienza is located in Tuscany, in the new appellation Orcia DOC, between Montalcino and Montepulciano. Our 35 hectares of vineyards have been farmed organically since the beginning (officially certified since vintage 2019) consisting mostly of Sangiovese, alongside Syrah, Vermentino, Viognier, Roussanne and Marsanne. Soils are mainly limestone and clay. On average, vineyards are set at 470 meters asl and form a natural amphitheater of vines around the winery. This offers a 360° exposure and allows us to vinify each plot separately and compare different vinifications of the same plot (skin contact, time of maceration, etc.) to get every little nuance of the grapes and vineyards. Seasoned English winemaker Tim Manning, who studied and worked in New-Zealand and then worked with Pinot Noir in Oregon before settling down for good in Tuscany, joined Fabbrica in 2020. His previous experiences give an innovative and hand-crafted approach to Sangiovese. His winemaking is artisanal and natural, including vinification in Nomblot, unlined concrete tanks, gentle crushing by foot (foulage), long maceration in small open bins, whole bunch and manual punching-downs rather than pumping-overs. When blending, we don’t follow the model of French cru; on the contrary for us it’s all about expression of the wine and our identity. Blending is a careful tasting of all our tanks and barrels to make wines that will show their origin and bring the soul of Fabbrica into each bottle. We don’t aim to copy anything that has already been made, our objective is to experiment and create some unique and original wines from an underrated and rising winemaking area.
