Claudiana was founded in Turin in 1855,in the middle of the Italian Risorgimento. After just six years it was moved to Florence, where worker for the Evangelical Churches and for the sake of Italian culture in general until 1924. The head offices were moved back to Turin after 1960. The origin of the name of the publishing house comes from a great bishop of Turin, Claudio, lived during the Carolingian period (9th century). Claudio was considered a precursor of the Evangelical movement for his fight against the adoration of sacred images in churches and for his interest in divulging the knowledge of the Bible to the people. Speaking of records, Claudiana was also the first Italian publishing house to produce an illustrated magazine for children: “L’amico dei fanciulli” (1870), which became very popular also in public school. Claudiana remains today faithful to its guiding principles: to promote the study of the Bible without dogmatism and to establish an increasingly more intense dialogue between the global Protestant culture and the Italian, Catholic and lay one.
