Limmud is a global movement which is identified with significant grassroots transformations of Jewish life over the last thirty years. Limmud has become a standard for its festivals of learning and culture, and the impact achieved through the development of volunteers that organise these events and activities, supported and trained by the generations that came before. Limmud was established in the UK in 1980. This remains the operational hub and headquarters of the international support network Limmud International, as well as the basis for events in the UK including Limmud Conference which attracts 2,800 people of all ages enjoying over 1,000 sessions during a week-long international festival each December. There are now 83 Limmud communities around the world in 43 countries running local Limmud events based on a common set of shared values. In 2015, 33,000 people participated in these Limmud events created by 3,000 volunteers. In 2006, Limmud initiated Limmud International to develop and connect Limmud volunteers worldwide as they establish and grow Limmud communities, by providing training, mentoring and support for Limmud groups, and as a platform for innovation and a forum for the sharing of ideas and good practices. Limmud communities everywhere share the commitment, “Wherever you find yourself, Limmud will take you one step further on your Jewish journey.” All Limmud groups promote learning, voluntarism, and diversity, yet each event is adapted to the local culture.
