Founded in 1956, the Nassau County Committee on Alcoholism (today known as LICADD) was an organization whose mission was to educate the general public on the nature of alcoholism and to provide a liaison to therapeutic treatment for alcoholics and their families. Founded by R. Brinkley “Brink” Smithers, a wealthy philanthropist who got sober himself in 1954, the Smithers family (through the Christopher D. Smithers Foundation) remains a vital supporter of LICADD and the mission. Today, LICADD’s mission is to address the addictive climate of our times by providing initial attention and referral services to individuals, families, and children, through intervention, education, and professional guidance, to overcome the ravages of alcohol and other drug-related problems. This pioneer not-for-profit agency on has been on a mission to save lives for over 62 years, now offering services including: Anger Management, Chemical Dependency Evaluations and Treatment Referral Services, Planned Family Interventions, Family Education and Support Counseling, Relapse Prevention Services, Community Education & Prevention Programs, and Professional Development Trainings.
