Hampton Roads Classical is an independent, virtue-based, full time classical academy in the south Hampton Roads area of Virginia. We offer a rigorous American classical education through a content-rich, Trivium-based approach, rooted in the liberal arts. We currently offer Kindergarten through 6th grade with plans to expand each year, by matriculation, through 12th grade. Mission The mission of Hampton Roads Classical is to cultivate intellectual and moral virtue in our students, through a rigorous classical education program that disciplines the mind to a lifelong pursuit of wisdom grounded in the objective standards of truth, goodness, and beauty intrinsic to the human spirit. Vision In close partnership with parents and guardians, we seek to prepare students who will become the future guardians of the American republic to lead responsible, independent and productive lives, in the firm belief that such virtues are required to accept the privileges and responsibilities of civic duty in a free and just society. We follow a distinctively classical approach to teaching students and believe that the acquisition of wisdom and the cultivation of virtue are the central tasks of education. Philosophy of Education The educational philosophy of the academy will be based on four pillars: • A high view of mankind with acknowledgement of objective standards of truth, goodness and beauty. • The centrality of the Western tradition and the founding principles of America. This will include a Great Books approach to reading literature, history, science, and philosophy from original sources as they were written in that period of time. • A Trivium-based approach that teaches the Tools of Learning through the seven artes liberales in a way that is aligned to a child’s strengths and natural abilities at each developmental stage. • A virtue-based ethos, informed by the values, customs, conventions, and norms of the Judeo-Christian tradition.
