Leaders who seek consultants to improve their businesses are often left without a sound and comprehensive understanding of how to continue increasing their organization’s capacity to create desired futures. Rather than developing into the change agents themselves they rely exclusively on external consultants to direct organizational change. Understanding how human beings function individually and collectively in organizations requires a specialized knowledge base. Many capable business leaders correctly identify issues that must be addressed in their organization but may underestimate the complexity and subtleness of human functioning in implementing change. Most qualified consultants and executive coaches do a good job within the domains of their expertise, but often lack the skill and understanding to help others engage in transformational learning that actually enhances their capacity to create. Our perspective is that structure influences behaviour, and that components of a system cannot be changed without affecting the whole. Change must start at the top but be informed by the entire enterprise.
