There are over 100 forms of disease that target the liver including fatty liver, Reye’s Disease, Hepatitis A, B, and C, and many others. Liver disease is under-diagnosed and under-treated in Canada. Living with uncontrolled liver disease can severely affect a patient’s quality of life and longevity. For example, if a virus C infection of the liver is untreated, the result is liver cirrhosis and the need for a lifesaving liver transplant. Even after a successful transplant, patients are required to be on anti-rejection medications for life. We hope that through early detection, diagnosis and advanced new treatment, Viral Hepatitis C will be treated and cured before the host’s liver is irrecoverable. The average time it takes to explore and correctly test for and diagnose the symptoms of liver disease in Canada is between 6 and 12 months. It could take another 6 to 12 months to see a specialist after being diagnosed! Our goal at Liver Care Canada is to ensure that every Canadian living with the effects of liver disease will receive timely intervention and appropriate treatment, with a view to eradicating Hepatitis C in Ontario by 2020, and in all of Canada by 2025.
