The United States Probation Office for the Northern District of Iowa has offices in Cedar Rapids and Sioux City. Federal offices of Probation and Pretrial Services assist in the administration of justice and promote community safety. Officers work in one of three areas: o Pretrial Investigations: Conduct an investigation and recommend whether the defendant should be released or detained o Presentence Investigations: Prepare a comprehensive report that provides the Court with information to determine appropriate sentence o Post Conviction Supervision: Assist in the fair administration of justice by executing the sentence, reducing the risk to reoffend and protecting the community
