HABITAT MARTE Space Analog Station

In Brazil, in semiarid of Rio Grande do Norte State, is operating the Mars analog research station Habitat Marte. The station Habitat Marte is the only Mars analog habitat in operation in South hemisphere. Since December, 2017 just happened 67 missions with more than 300 participants. During the simulation missions, the analog astronauts follow protocols and routines of a space station. In Extravehicular Activities (EVA) are used spacesuits to simulate to be in Mars or Moon landscape. Related to our research in Brazil, the challenge of Habitat Marte is be a self-sustainable habitat. This means: produce the own food, recycle waste, sewage and the use renewables. This concept would be applied to space habitats and to Earth remote /arid areas, as affected by heatwaves, climate change and droughts, as Chile deserts. We are operating a greenhouse with aquaponics technologies, producing Tilapia fish and vegetables. The organizers developed a new category of space analog missions during coronavirus pandemics: the virtual missions. In virtual missions, participants are invited to participate in remote activities related to the Habitat Marte protocols and research themes associate to space and sustainability, observing how Habitat Marte would contribute to solutions related to isolation during the coronavirus period. We realized that the actions of Habitat Marte may present guidelines for this challenging moment.
