Mindfulness-Based Chronic Pain Management (MBCPM™) is a program developed by Dr. Jackie Gardner-Nix, a chronic pain consultant physician from 2001 to 2016 in the Dept. Anaesthesia, St Michael’s Hospital, and Associate Professor at University of Toronto, Canada. It is based on the renowned Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program (MBSR) originated by Jon Kabat-Zinn in the USA several decades ago and has been developed into a programme further customized to the needs of those dealing with chronic pain. It is as effective for stress management and for health care professionals, all of whom are at risk for stress-related health challenges. Most courses are conducted in meeting rooms at various hospitals/health facilities, in a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. Attendees learn the principles of mindfulness, the importance of living in the moment, and the power of “now”, and how these relate to suffering less and improving healing. Mindfulness assists in remaining calmer and more in control of mind and bodily symptoms despite the challenges of everyday life, such as when interacting with family, friends, colleagues, employers and insurers. This can change the intensity of pain and disability suffering, both emotional and physical, in a very positive way. Life skills are also enhanced in this course. In addition to producing course curricula and materials for entry and alumni level courses, NNC’s principle functions include training, mentoring and accrediting facilitators wishing to teach the courses to patients/clients in their own communities, thereby increasing accessibility of the courses as they spread throughout Ontario and beyond. The course is now taught in French in Quebec. NNC’s website helps identify trained facilitators and their locations. NNC is an information and consulting hub for those seeking its Mindfulness-Based services across the Globe.
