The Birkbeck Sport Business Centre is a specialist research centre based in the Department of Management at Birkbeck, University of London. Since 1999 members of the Centre have been actively involved in sport industry research with a particular focus on governance and regulation. Over the years, the Centre has published research in a wide variety of outlets including edited books, academic journals, individual book chapters, and reports. This research has had an impact outside academia and members of the Centre regularly contribute to the policy debate, for example through their involvement in parliamentary inquiries, and their work with sports organisations to promote good governance through the development of industry guidelines. The work of the Centre has been recognised outside of the UK with members involved in a European network of academic and sporting institutions. In parallel to its research activities the members of the Birkbeck Sport Business Centre deliver a range of postgraduate sport management programmes, situated within the wider portfolio of Birkbeck management programmes. In essence the Birkbeck Sport Business Centre carries out research on addressing real industry challenges, whilst delivering management programmes directly focused on preparing the next generation of well-educated managers for the sport sector.
