World Community Development Programme

World Community Development Programme (WCDP) works with women and community based organizations to promote grassroots level development. Since 2000 we have been working on developing community-based solutions to community-based problems by listening to community members and providing the assistance they need to allow them to help themselves. In 2006, WCDP was approached by an individual seeking assistance with the construction of a school in Bulaga, Uganda. WCDP worked with the community to develop ways to raise funds locally to complete the construction of their school. The community now has space to hold classes and other community events. The really great thing about this project is that the initiative and most of the resources came from the community directly, making it a true community effort. In October 2007, WCDP began a pilot project to provide microcredit loans to women and community groups for establishing or expanding small business enterprises, or providing much needed community infrastructure. Since that time, we have issued roughly $5,000 in microcredit loans to the women in 4 villages in Uganda for small business development, agricultural development and community benefit projects. The majority of these loans have gone to women for small business and agricultural projects. Examples include the purchase of chickens, which yield eggs for consumption and sale and chicks that can be sold to other women looking to start their own businesses. One such woman has been so successful that she is now able to build a permanent home for her family. Another woman has used her business profits to pay school fees and provide family health care. Still another woman used borrowed funds to build a biogas digester, which provides clean natural gas for cooking and lighting her home, saving her money on charcoal and firewood and providing an income in the sale of fertilizer produced as a byproduct.
