South Asian Cultural Exchange
anchorlink.vanderbilt.eduSACE is an organization made up of over 350 Vanderbilt undergraduates dedicated to representing, celebrating, and sharing South Asian culture at Vanderbilt and in the greater Nashville area. Throughout the year, we host various social and cultural events, several of which are highlighted below. Garba Garba is the group dance form associated with the Indian holiday, Navaratri, meaning "nine nights," which honors the many Hindu goddesses. As the name suggests, this holiday lasts nine nights. In India, the dance is done in massive circles to the rhythmic beats played by a local live band. The dance is a upbeat repetition of the same 7 or 8 steps done in a circle in a group. To honor this holiday and educate the Vanderbilt community about this rich aspect of Indian culture, SACE hosts a Garba every fall to teach students how to do Garba while indulging them with free, delicious Indian food. The Diwali Showcase The Diwali Showcase, SACE's largest and most popular event, honors the Hindu festival of lights. Every year over 200 students band together to prepare dances in a multitude of Indian dance genres, including Classical, Bhangra, Bollywood, Raas, and Fusion. With over 200 performers every year, this event attracts over 1000 guests from the Vanderbilt and surrounding Nashville community. SACE Speaks SACE Speaks is SACE's signature cultural education program, designed to promote awareness of the South Asian experience. Through independent and collaborative events that highlight complex components and intersectionalities of the South Asian identity, SACE Speaks strives to educate and empower South Asian students at Vanderbilt. Holi This festival of spring never fails to paint Vanderbilt in a rainbow of colors. SACE welcomes spring and the triumph of good over evil with plenty of colored powder (gulal), music, food, friends, and the best mess you will ever be a part of.
