A healthcare organisation serving the whole of Wales, WAST provides emergency medical services, population-wide telephone and web-based healthcare, advice and information services via NHS Direct Wales and a range of non-emergency patient transport services to 3 million people spread over 8,000 sq miles. In 2008-09, it dealt with 360,000 calls for emergency and urgent medical assistance, 340,000 telephone contacts and 450,000 web hits to NHS Direct Wales and undertook 1.4 million non-urgent patient journeys.
