Project Gaia Inc., a U.S. based non-profit organization with affiliates in Ethiopia, Kenya and Nigeria and private sector collaborators in many countries, is a global initiative promoting cleancooking fuels, particularly the simple alcohols, ethanol and methanol, for use in properly designed alcohol cooking stoves. These fuels and stoves have the potential to be extremely affordable and thus represent a clean-cooking solution suitable for base-of-the-pyramid consumers, and for all consumers who are today dependent on wood, charcoal and kerosene for cooking. Project Gaia’s flagship program is in Ethiopia where it has served refugee communities for a dozen years as an Implementing Partner to the UNHCR. It has enabled commercialization efforts in a host of countries including Tanzania, Nigeria, Haiti and Mozambique.
