Homebirth Practice Essentials AN ONLINE CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSE IN TWO PARTS FACILITATED BY HILARY SCHLINGER, C.N.M., M.S, C.P.M.(ret) Homebirth Practice Essentials is, in total, a 60-hour interactive, online course for midwives interested in operating an independent homebirth practice. Those interested in learning about homebirth who are not planning to practice can opt for the 20-hour introduction. The Introduction to Homebirth 2-week course includes the history of homebirth, why homebirth is desired, the role of the midwife in the homebirth setting, national and international homebirth perspective, safety (what the studies show), legal issues including regulation of homebirth practice, and an overview of protocols, standards and guidelines. The Homebirth Practice Essentials continuation takes four weeks to expand upon the introduction, and is designed for the midwife who is setting up a homebirth practice. Covered areas include: self-assessment, practice structure, informed consent and client responsibility, routes to obtaining homebirth experience, creating a business plan, compiling practice documents, creating consulting relationships, obtaining skills and equipment, licenses and certifications, accessing labs and radiology, compiling documents for clients, charting in the electronic age, birth assistants, social aspects of homebirth, malpractice, insurance credentialing, billing essentials, data collection, peer review, computer resources and self-care. Participants will need to arrange separate mentored experiences in their home communities. The tips, tools, and multiple resources ensure that, by the end of this course, the midwife will have both a plan of action and the documents needed for initiating homebirth practice. Designed for the busy practitioner, participants can learn at their own pace while interacting online with colleagues within a six-week time frame. An estimated 10 hours a week should be allocated in order to be successful. The course is asynchronous, meaning that students log in when convenient versus the same time every day. Students must possess a working knowledge of basic computer skills including word processing, e-mail, internet searches, and navigating the web in order to successfully complete this course.
