Lovebridge is a community and humanitarian programme using a professional method and an intensive workforce to fight against extreme poverty in Mauritius. Its main objective is to support and empower families who are under the poverty threshold to improve their quality of life and help them to gradually aspire to become less vulnerable, leading an autonomous and a more satisfying life. One leg of the project is the pairing of families who have some means to support, in different modes, families who are needy. But emphasis is also placed on the two-way enrichment for each pair of families. Pairing of well-off families with families in need This project aims at promoting a sense of solidarity of those who have the means and the desire to help families in need. Individuals and families who would be willing to join the project would become sincere “friends” (accompagnateurs) of these families on a pairing system, which would in fact benefit both families, as each one will enrich each other in different ways. Those who do not have the time nor the ability to be active “friends” can still choose a specific family and, through a social worker who will act on their behalf, advice and support that family depending on the latter’s specific needs. The ‘accompagnateurs’ of families in need will be coached in order to harmonise the basis of their implication. Guidelines will define clearly the main goals of the project and the acceptable attitudes needed to preserve the intimacy and dignity of the beneficiaries, as well as the respect expected on both sides.
