Sammlung Goetz is an internationally significant collection of contemporary art located in Munich. It was founded in 1993 by the collector Ingvild Goetz and now includes more than 5,000 works from almost all artistic genres. The main areas of focus include Arte Povera, American paintings of the 1980s, Young British Artists, media art, photography and works on paper. There are also extensive bodies of work by individual artists, such as Rosemarie Trockel, Thomas Schütte, Mike Kelley and Peter Fischli / David Weiss. In 1989/90, Ingvild Goetz, commissioned the then-unknown architects Herzog & de Meuron to build a private museum, which was opened in 1993. Since then, Sammlung Goetz has presented works from the collection to the public in changing, curated exhibitions. In addition, the collection has been engaged in more than 50 cooperation exhibitions with other institutions worldwide. To ensure the continued existence of Sammlung Goetz, in 2014 Ingvild Goetz donated a significant portion of her media art collection and the gallery building to the Free State of Bavaria, which continues to use it as an exhibition space for contemporary art.
