It all started when I read The Scandal of Biblical Illiteracy: It’s Our Problem. It was there that I learned some of the most horrifying statistics about Christians and their Bibles. They read: Less than 50% of adults can name the 4 Gospels. 60 % of Americans are unable to name half of the 10 commandments. 12% of adults believe that Joan of Arc was Noah’s wife. 50% of High school graduates thought that Sodom and Gomorrah were husband and wife. A considerable number of respondents thought that the Sermon on the Mount was preached by Billy Graham. This article led me to do more research on the state of Christianity and the state of Scripture. It was worse than I thought. According to a Barna Poll, over half of Americans are Bible users. This means most of the statistics above are not from lack of having a Bible, but rather lack of knowing how to use it. In Ephesians, Paul talks about the full armor of God. In verse 17 he calls the word of God, “the sword of the Spirit.” The sword is a tool used by soldiers to protect themselves against attack. However, a soldier is not handed a sword and then immediately sent out to battle. No, the soldier is extensively trained on how to properly use it. There was no mistake that the word of God was exemplified as a sword. It, too, needs extensive training prior to use. We also see a need for correct teaching in Acts chapter 8:29-31. It reads, “29 And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.”30 So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” 31 And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.“ Later in the chapter, we learn that the Eunuch accepts Jesus as savior and is then baptized. This all happened because someone who knew the Scriptures was able to explain it to someone who did not. This is why we created The Bold Movement. We want to teach and train women how to carry the sword.
