India suffers from a dehumanized maternal care system. Unnecessary medical interventions have become increasingly common, and women frequently go home regretful, disillusioned and in pain. On the other extreme, millions of women still have insufficient access to basic, yet required, medicines, protocols, and evidence-based interventions that save lives. Aastar was founded in 2019 by Dr. Janhavi Nilekani, deep rooted in the belief that all child-bearing women have access to fundamental rights, including but not limited to, privacy, the companionship of a loved one, informed consent with regard to medical interventions, and an abuse-free birthing experience. Our Vision is “A future in which every woman is treated with respect and dignity during childbirth, and the right treatment is provided at the right time.” Our Mission is to Increase access to High Quality Respectful Maternity Care for 25 million women by 2025. Aastar is fulfilling this mission by - Building a collaborative digital platform to support capacity building of maternal healthcare workers and improve maternal health outcomes across India and - Establishing a center of excellence practicing professional midwifery care alongside comprehensive obstetric care. We are committed to improving the standards of maternal care to ensure a healthy, dignified, and joyful journey into motherhood.
