Your Street Your Voice (YSYV) is a paid after school program for high school students of targeted identities to learn about careers in the built environment, and use design as a tool for racial and environmental justice. YSYV is a design studio format where students are asked on day one: ‘If you could change one thing in your neighborhood through design, what would it be?’ The students work for the rest of the program to develop their ideas, create a vision collage of their projects, generate architectural drawings, and present their ideas in a final studio review. We teach students about the physical and social systems in the city, and dive into how density, gentrification, climate change and policy impact our buildings and community. The intention of YSYV is to empower students to be agents of change as designers and activists for social and environmental justice.
