Reach Out and Read Colorado is an evidence-based non-profit that partners with health care providers throughout the state to prepare Colorado's youngest children to succeed in school by distributing books and prescribing families to read together. Reach Out and Read Colorado is unique in the fact that the model builds on the relationship between parents and medical providers to develop essential early literacy skills, starting in infancy, via the existing health care infrastructure. By training medical providers to distribute age-appropriate books to young children from age 6 months to 5 years and sharing guidance for engagement with caregivers at well-child visits, Reach Out and Read Colorado is directly impacting childhood brain development through promoting reading aloud and early learning. In 2014 Reach Out and Read Colorado distributed more than 165,000 books to more than 90,000 children throughout 230 clinics in 55 Colorado counties.
