A long and rich history stands behind your local United Way here in LaPorte County. It's an international history filled with compassionate people who shared a vision of a better community and found a way to pool their own individual community’s resources together and then distribute them in a way that made a powerful and profound difference for those in need. In 1887, the United Way movement began in Denver, Colorado, when a woman, a priest, a rabbi, and two ministers came together to improve the conditions of their community. Today, those efforts have grown into a worldwide movement, and each community-based United Way still carries the torch of community leadership and charitable spirit that was lit more than a century ago. United Way is now the largest privately supported nonprofit in the world, with nearly 1,800 United Ways in 41 countries and territories. Right here in LaPorte County, your local United Way carries on that tradition. Our “look” and methods may change, but one thing will always remain constant, we pledge to do our best to keep a handle on the pulse of LaPorte County, to be flexible, and to work with other caring people in our communities to make our county a welcoming place with a strong safety net.
