Gisborne District Council is the local government body for the Gisborne/Tairāwhiti New Zealand. We are a unitary authority covering both district and regional council functions. Tairāwhiti is the first place in the world to see the rising sun and our region covers the largest land area in the eastern North Island, covering 8355 square kilometres with 1889km of roads. Gisborne is a vibrant and progressive community. Our region is growing and current statistics show a population of 43,653 (2013 census). We are also a culturally significant region with Gisborne being the site of the first meeting between Māori and European. Our people are diverse and our heritage rich with history.
