Oxford Geography Society
www.oxgeogsoc.comWe feel the Society has an important role to play within the university. Our purpose is threefold: to promote Geography within Oxford University through speaker events, debates and seminars; to provide a social setting for students of all years groups and subjects; and to encourage and accommodate career opportunities for students studying Geography. The society is open to anyone from the university and is intended to incorporate topics broader than the degree with a view to promoting Geography as a subject as well as seeking to place geography in a wider context. The original Society ceased to exist in 2011 and in Michaelmas 2014 James Manning, Rebecca Lane and Laura Neilson re-launched GeogSoc. It was previously named the Herbertson Society after one of the first readers at the School of Geography at Oxford University, one of the first Geography departments at a university in Britain. Andrew John Herbertson, a renowned Geographer of his time, died in July 1915. We decided to start the new society in the academic year of 2014-15, celebrating the 100th anniversary of Herbertson’s death.
